How Plumbers Replace Bathroom and Kitchen Sink Faucets

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

If you are considering upgrading your bathroom and kitchen sink faucets, you have come to the right place. The following explanation will make your task much easier and will save your time as well.

However, before we start, make sure that you have following materials ready with you.

- New faucet assembly

- Basin wrench

- Adjustable wrenches

- Slip-joint pliers

- Scouring pad

Now follow these simple steps. (Assuming that you are replacing the old two-handled faucet with the more modern single-handled type)

Replacing Kitchen Sink Faucets

1. Before you start, go at the shut-off valves under the sink, and turn off the water.

2. Open the faucet so that it could drain any excess water.

3. The next step is to disconnect the hot and cold water supply lines from the shutoff valves. You can use a small adjustable-wrench to do this.

4. Reach up behind the faucet. You will find the coupling nuts that connect the supply tubes to the faucet. Unscrew the same using a basin wrench.

5. Behind the faucet, you will also find mounting nuts that hold the faucet in place. Remove these nuts using the same basin wrench.

6. Now that you have disconnected the mounting nuts, you can lift out the old faucet. Lifting it out, disconnect the sprayer hose from the assembly using an adjustable wrench.

7. Lift out the sprayer hose, and remove the faucet.

8. Once you have removed the faucet, clean the surface of the sink thoroughly with a scouring pad.

9. Remove the escutcheon cap and replace the same with the one that is included with your new faucet.

10. Now you are ready to make the new connection. Bring your new sprayer hose, and slip it down through the sprayer hole.

11. Feed the sprayer hose up through the center faucet hole, and connect the hose through the sprayer nipple using an adjustable wrench.

12. If the hot and cold supply tubes of the new faucet have a different length, attach flexible connectors to the fittings on the supply tubes. Hold the faucet fitting stationary with one wrench and tighten each connection with another wrench.

13. Insert and feed the supply lines and the connectors into the center hole, and then seat the faucet.

14. Now crawl up under the sink and in order to hold the faucet in place, install a washer and nut to the end bolts.

15. First, tighten the nuts by hand, and then with a basin wrench.

16. Connect the supply lines to the shutoff valves, and turn the water on.

17. Turn on the faucet and check for leaks.

Replacing Bathroom Sink Faucets

1. Go underneath the sink. Turn off the water. Loosen the collar nuts on the drainpipe.

2. Drain any excessive water, and then remove the drainpipe.

3. Loosen the nuts that hold the pop-up assembly in place under the sink using slip-joint pliers.

4. Unscrew the pop-up flange in order to free the assembly underneath the sink.

5. Remove the fittings that join the supply lines of the old faucet to the shutoff valves, using a wrench.

6. Repeat the steps 4-15 as explained above for replacing kitchen faucet.

7. Now, you have to install the pop-up assembly.

8. Push the pop-up rod down through the body of the faucet.

9. Attach the flat bar.

10. At the bottom of the new flange, use a little plumber’s putty to hold the tailpiece so that the whole assembly protrudes up through the drain hole in the sink.

11. Spin the ring to position the same with the tailpiece under the sink.

12. In order to secure pop-up housing in place, tighten the nut on top of the tailpiece.

13. Hook up the pop-up lever onto the flat bar in order to secure it to the pop-up housing.

14. Drop the stopper into the drain hole.

15. Replace the drainpipe.

16. Tighten the collar nuts.

17. Turn on the faucet and check for leaks.

Hence, replacing a kitchen and a bathroom faucet is almost similar except for the work related to the pop-up assembly that is included with the bathroom sink.

How to Install a Vessel Sink Faucet

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

Vessel Faucets… what’s the big deal?!

Independently mounted faucet or integral sink mount faucet:
When you are considering how to install a vessel sink it’s a huge deal. It’s not like going to the home store buy a generic faucet with the right spacing on the water service and bingo it’s a no brainer! With vessel sinks you need to know whether your faucet will be mounted on the counter top independent of the sink or on the sink with an integral faucet mount. Or even on the wall…which is outside the scope of this article…that is a whole different ballgame.

Separately mounted faucet:

If you need to install a faucet that has an independent mounting location from the vessel sink you will need to know the height of the sink where you plan to have the faucet. Then you will have to go and shop for a style you like that will have clearance over the sink edge. Typically vessel sinks are 5″-7″ tall. Vessel faucets tend to be listed in two “overall” heights….which is not what you care about…it is the height of the actual spigot where the water comes out. Many online vendors will give the overall dimension…but not the spigot height. In general faucets that are about 11″ tall in overall height have a spigot at around 7″ which is good for most vessel sinks with an independently mounted faucet…no matter what shape.

Vessel mounted faucet:

This type of vessel is very nice for small counter tops because the faucet is mounted on top of the sink, therefore the sink can be pushed closer to the wall. For this type of installation you will want a shorter faucet that you would use on an independently mounted faucet. This is so because the faucet is now standing on top of the sink! Typically faucets that are about 7″ tall have a spout at about 3″. There is one thing that “they” don’t usually tell you either….when you get one of the short vessel faucets…to mount on top of a 5″-7″ tall vessel…rather than on the counter top…the supplied water service hoses will be about…you guessed it…5″-7″ to short! The vendors for these faucets usually supply a 12″ long water service hose and NO you can’t buy a longer one at the home store because they are special at one end being unique to a single hole mounted vessel faucet. Not to worry take the hose to the home store and get a brass nipple connector to fit the wall side of the hose and then get a extension hose that fits the nipple and your water service shut off valve…presto problem solved!

Oh and one more thing…when you are considering how to install a vessel sink, you will need to choose the finish of the hardware, chrome, oil rubbed bronze, brushed nickel. You may need to shop around to get the faucet and drain of your choice to match up. Chrome is the way to go for the bottle trap or standard p-trap however I have seen oil rubbed bronze bottle traps and standard p-trap drain pipes…but get ready for sticker shock!

Do your homework and ask lots of questions!

Bathroom Sinks – Something to Be Proud Of

Friday, November 20th, 2009

Bathroom sinks are one of those things that everyone uses, but no one puts a lot of thought into. Most people use one every day to brush their teeth and wash their face, but they do not put any more thought into their bathroom sink than they do the mirror they stare at while they brush their hair. Some people, however, see the bathroom sink as something that can be beautiful, or at least interesting.

Replacing the bathroom sink is typically not something that is done unless it either cracks, as can happen with cheaper plastic types or the entire bathroom is going through a renovation. When replacing a bathroom sink, it is a good idea to shop around and see what types of sink interest the buyer and will go with whatever decor has been selected for the bathroom in its final form. Bathroom sinks can be made of many different types of material, from porcelain to plastic and metal to marble, and have such features as lever-activated drain plugs and riveted slots for holding soap, but often the focal point of the bathroom sink will be the faucets.

There are a few companies out there that have made their names on faucets and, though it may seem silly to some, a high quality faucet is something that many people feel they can be proud of. When shopping for homes, buyers will notice that the manufacturers or sellers will often mention the brand name of the faucet as a selling point because people know that certain names mean higher quality building materials and longer lasting devices. High quality sinks and faucets are also seen as a high class luxury item. After all, a cheap plastic sink in a multi-million-dollar mansion just would not do. A $2,000 sink in a $200,000 home, however, could be seen as luxurious. It really all depends on the tastes of the people making decisions. Regardless, most high quality sink manufacturers emblazon the name of their company rather boldly on their sinks, generally on the handles or knobs of the faucet.

In the recent McMansion era of American home building, such little things as expensive bathroom sinks have often been what sold one home over another, similar home down the street. Although many people may not see the draw of high quality sinks and faucets, they will quickly change their story when a cheap model springs a leak after only a few years use, or develops a quickly growing crack after something as mundane as a hair brush is dropped in it. Just like everything else, you get what you pay for, and when it comes to bathroom sinks, it’s all about durability.
