Bathroom Sink Trends – What’s In, What’s Out?

My husband and I renovated our master and guest bathrooms. Now we want to renovate the lower bathroom . We are senior citizens and updated bathrooms keep our home market ready. After doing some research we realized a total renovation would be too costly. But we could do a couple of things to perk up the bathroom, starting with replacing the sink.

I researched sink trends and found some were current and others were fading. You may be familiar with these trends.

Dual sinks. People like togetherness, but not at the bathroom sink. The dual sink trend started years ago and it is still hot. When we renovated our master bath we asked the plumbing contractor to run a pipe to a second sink. It was worth every buck. We are not going to install dual sinks in the lower level bathroom, however, because we don’t use it together.

Vessel sinks. This bowl-type sink rests on top of the vanity. I wanted to put a vessel sink in the guest bath, but our contractor talked me out of it. Thank goodness, because the 10-year-old trend is fading. According to the Decorating Diva Website, glass vessels are “a cleaning nightmare” and show fingerprints, toothpaste, and yukky residue.

Drop-In sinks. This trend came from do-it-yourselfers. The summer 2009 issue of “Kitchen & Bath Makeovers” contains an article about sink styles called “Drop-In Delights.” It says changing the bathroom sink updates a bathroom instantly. “A sink can be an artistic element in your bath,” the article notes. If you are renovating a bathroom on a budget, however, art may not be a priority.

Undermount sinks. Beghan Dockendorf, a writer for “This Old House” magazine,” thinks undermount sinks gives vanities a sleek look. Farm sinks, a trend from the past, have made it to the present and the future, according to Dockendorf. This simple design goes with many decorating styles.

Brushed metal faucets. “The taps are essential to the overall design as the sink itself,” writes Dockendorf. Chris Conrad-Schultz describes faucet trends in “New Trends in Bathroom Sinks,” published on the Suite 101 Website. He says consumers are looking for easy-to-clean surfaces — brushed metals, less angles, and fixtures of muted silver, copper, bronze, and gold.

Cantilevered and deep sinks. “Bathrooms: Plan, Remodel, Build” by Creative Homeowner, says cantilevered, deep, and freestanding sinks are a hot trend these days. Pedestal sinks are still popular. Manufacturers have gone to great lengths to give sinks appeal by sculpting their forms,” the resource explains, “but the simpler shapes are both more practical and easier to keep clean.”

I cleared the clutter, cleaned the bathroom, and have alredy bought the Parisian Taupe paint. But I can’t paint until the giant mirror and outdated lighting fixture have been removed.

I will contact a glass company ask them to remove the mirror. My husband — a talented and trusted handyman — will take down the old light fixture. He will install a new fixture after I finish painting. Other renovations will occur when we are ready and our budget is ready. Renovating a bathroom in stages may be something for you to consider. One thing is sure, renovation is never dull!
